Resistance statistics from the microbiology laboratory show which pathogens are prevalent and how resistant they are to specific antibiotics. Regional/national resistance data must be taken into account when developing guidelines for empirical antibiotic therapy.

1

Ensure that the hospital has access to local epidemiological data on antibiotic resistance for the most common pathogenic bacteria

Possible data sources include:

  • The local or affiliated microbiology laboratory, with support from NARA (National Reference Centre for Antibiotic Resistance) where necessary, to identify resistance mechanisms
  • ANRESIS provides affiliated hospitals and laboratories with regional/national resistance data via an interactive dashboard. In addition, hospitals can request statistics based on local resistance data.

2

Ensure that epidemiological data on antibiotic resistance are user-friendly and actually get used

Resistance statistics should be made available to prescribers at the point of prescribing and presented in a user-friendly format (e.g. as a matrix table).

3

Ensure that the antibiotic resistance statistics are up to date

Aim for a regular (annual) update of the resistance data.
