Prescribing guidelines

The Swiss Society for Infectious Diseases (SSI) regularly draws up and publishes guidelines that enable doctors to optimise the use of antibiotics in line with the latest scientific evidence. Users have the opportunity to submit suggestions or ask questions via a comments function, thereby helping to further improve the guidelines.

Guidance on antibiotic treatment

The Bern Institute for General Practice (BIHAM) has produced evidence-based decision aids to support GPs and paediatricians, and their patients, in making a joint decision for or against antibiotic treatment. Easy-to-understand graphics illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of treatment with and without antibiotics for acute infectious cough, middle ear infection, acute tonsillitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infection and acute sinusitis.

Current resistance data

The ANRESIS Guide app from the Swiss Centre for Antibiotic Resistance presents the latest resistance data in a clear and intuitive way. This enables healthcare professionals to adapt their antibiotic prescribing practices to the current resistance situation in their region. The app also includes the SSI guidelines. You can also find general information and current trends at anresis.ch.

Gamified Education: Mission AntibiotiX

Solving clinical cases, gathering clues, making the right treatment decision: in the virtual escape game ‘Mission AntibiotiX’, prescribing doctors in both outpatient and inpatient settings can test their knowledge of antibiotic use in less than 20 minutes. A new topic is added every year; most recently, this was treatment duration. The educational game was developed by HPCi Vaud and the HPCI unit at the CHUV as part of World AMR Awareness Week and is available free of charge.

Communication materials for patients

The FOPH website ‘Antibiotics: Let’s use them properly – it’s important’ explains to the general public, in simple terms, how to take antibiotics correctly, what antibiotic resistance is, and why antibiotics are not necessary for certain infections. The factsheet is also available there in 13 languages and is suitable for use during consultations, along with free supporting materials (an explanatory video, posters and Post-it notes). In addition, the FOPH provides communication materials for healthcare professionals: leaflets for pharmacies, waiting rooms and consultations, as well as stickers for antibiotic packs to remind patients to take their medication as prescribed and to dispose of it correctly afterwards.

Comics for young and old

Two comics make the topic of antibiotic resistance accessible in an entertaining way; both are in French. In *Salomé*, the young heroine embarks on exciting adventures, discovering the world of bacteria, the benefits of antibiotics and the risks of using them incorrectly. The comic is aimed at children aged 8 to 12 and their families, and was produced in collaboration between the Agora d’Hypatie, the Cantonal Medical Officer of the Canton of Geneva and the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG). In *Les bactéries font de la résistance*, Luca – the common ancestor of all life – tells the story of bacteria: from their origins in the ocean to their resistance to antibiotics. This comic, created by microbiologists Christèle Aubry and Gilbert Greub (CHUV), is aimed at a wide audience.
